Volunteer Screening Instructions And Information
Fingerprinting Requirements and Procedures
In order to ensure the safety of students, all volunteers not under the direct supervision of district certificated staff will be required to be fingerprinted through the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation prior to any volunteer activities. As a result, fingerprinting must be completed for volunteers who are alone with students and not under the direct supervision of staff at a school site and on a field trip.
Each site will provide information on any scheduled mobile livescan services held at the school. This will allow fingerprinting to be completed on site during a specific day and time. Individual appointments can be made through any Live Scan provider. Prices vary and results may take between 2 days and 2 weeks. Once this process is completed, prints are valid through a volunteer’s time with the district. A data base will be maintained by the district and only one set of prints will be necessary if a parent volunteer has a child at more than one site within the district.
A volunteer requiring fingerprinting will need to obtain a copy of the REQUEST FOR LIVE SCAN SERVICE form BCIA 8016A from the school office (or Bernardo website). This form along with valid ID must be presented to staff of the Live Scan provider.

Insurance Coverage for Volunteers Information
Volunteers in our schools shall be considered employees of the District for worker’s compensation insurance purposes as stated in Board Policy 1240, provided that the following occurs:
A volunteer must sign in each time when arriving on campus with the Hall Pass system in the office.
If an individual is injured while serving as a volunteer, then worker’s compensation insurance forms must be completed within 24 hours of that injury. Information is available with the school nurse.
Volunteers are obligated to follow all safety precautions when working on a campus. Any hazards that are observed by the volunteer should be reported to the school office immediately.
School Site Reminders for Screening and Monitoring Volunteers
Volunteers are required to sign in and out with the Hall Pass system in the school office.
Administrators and teachers are responsible for supervising and directing Volunteers whenever they are working with students at school or at a school- sponsored event.
All school district personnel are responsible for reporting to the principal and/or the principal designee if they observe a volunteer not following the district-required volunteer code of conduct.
Whenever an employee of the school district learns that a volunteer may no longer be eligible to serve as a volunteer, the employee will notify the school principal, who will notify Human Resources of the situation. The Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources will inform the volunteer of the change in his/her volunteer status.
